Strategies Used in Firms Discussion

Workshop #1

Earlier in this chapter, you learned that strategy is not simply the domain of business and can be a critical component of athletic teams. Consider an athletic team you are a part of or have watched.

• How would you describe the team’s strategy?
• What are some examples of the team aligning its talent management practices with its strategy?
• How does the coach empower the team to execute its strategy?
• Does the team have an observable competitive advantage?

Each workshop assignment will be submitted in a Word document in essay format that is a minimum of 1 page in length. You should also include your sources used.

Workshop #2

Identify three firms that use a different generic strategy to compete: low cost, differentiation, and focus. For each of the three firms you identified, list the activities that support its generic strategy.

Take each of the three firms and apply Porter’s 5-Forces Model to them. Decide whether each of the three firms is in a structurally attractive industry based on your analysis.

Take each of the three firms and list each one’s tangible, intangible, and human resources. Construct a value chain for each of the three firms. Which firm would you invest in and why?

Your submission should be a minimum of one page in length. Please submit using a Word document and include your sources.

Workshop #3

Identify a company that has appeared on the “Great Places to Work For” List (http://www.greatplacetowork.com/best-companies/ 100-best-companies-to-work-for) for at least two years and outline why you believe that it was placed on this list.

Find a competitor of the company that is not included on the list. Compare and contrast the two companies. How does the company on the list stand out?

Submit your responses in a Word document that is a minimum of one page in length. You should also include your sources used.
