One part of the sociological perspective is seeing the general in the particular. This means examining the general patterns, experiences, treatment, expectations or assumptions that may be experienced based on your belonging to a particular category (i.e., sex, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc.).
Although people are unique, society shapes the lives of people based on their membership in various categories. In order to understand how we can apply this perspective to sociological topics like relationships and family we need to begin by applying it to your own lives.
What are some examples of the general categories you fall (or have been placed) into?
How has your dating life (and/or friendship selection) been affected or shaped by these categories?
Your answer should give examples and explain how you feel your life has been affected.

Could you please help respond to two peers Sarah Hi! My name is Sarah and I am from Vienna, Virginia. I would describe myself as anxious, passionate, and nerdy but my friends would probably describe me as funny and talkative.
I am hoping to learn about the ways social constructions have played into the ways Americans think about family. Specifically, I am hoping to learn about how things like misogyny and toxic masculinity have reinforced the gender norms associated with the ‘all American’ nuclear family.
Additionally, I would like to learn about the sociology of “alternative” forms of family that subvert the norm such as LGBT+ families and found families. Throughout my life, my relationships have been affected by the fact that I am neurodivergent and have multiple anxiety disorders.
Growing up I experienced a fair amount of bullying for these conditions, which limited my choices in friends and meant that I never felt like I could risk losing the relationships I had. The fears I had of losing the few friends I had meant that when those relationships became toxic or manipulative, I was afraid to leave and risk being completely isolated.
Being neurodivergent also means I sometimes cannot read tone and can be seen as very socially awkward because I either do not recognize social cues, or forget to follow them myself.
Overall, this ‘category’ affects my ability to create healthy relationships due to my tendency to be manipulated and lack of social skills. Nallely Calles OrtegaJan 19 12:39pmLast reply Jan 20 10:24pm

Hi everyone, my name is Nallely and my heritage is Salvadorian. Perseverant, passionate and witty are some words I would use to describe myself. My family and friends would use the words sarcastic and argumentative to describe me. I am hoping to gain some insight on different family dynamics and how they can affect the individual.
I signed up for this class because I think it would aid me in becoming a good social worker. A general category that I fall into is First Gen and I’d say this has been what has defined my life the most so far. It is the reason
I would describe myself as perseverant in the first place, because you cannot be perseverant without obstacles, and being first gen comes with plenty.
It made me be resourceful, independent, and resilient from a very young age because my parents came to me for everything, such as filling out paperwork, being a translator, etc. Latine and woman are other categories I fall into, both categories have made me a more passionate and outspoken person.
Within my family and most Latine families, there is a lot of misogyny and this has made me have to stand up for myself against my own family. Being Latina has, also, made me the subject of racism and after having to stand up to my family, racists are nothing; but all these interactions have made me a more outspoken person.
These categories have helped my relationships because they have made me more empathetic. They have also taught me how important boundaries are.
